The Hayles Memorial Library contains a great deal of information about local shipwrecks, shipping, the history of the port and general sailing and seamanship.
Part of the photographic collection is also stored in here and is currently being accessioned onto our database. The collection is extensive, and covers a wide range of topics, tracing the history of picnics at Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, the first Hayles ferries, development of the port and shipping, and life in early Townsville.
There are no lending facilities, but researchers are welcome to peruse the shelves and ask for photocopies of information.
We also have a set of Lloyds Registers from 1912 - 1985.
One of our projects for the future is to extend the library. This will provide more desk space for researchers and storage space for the photographic collection.
One of the volunteer staff is present in the library every Friday, making this the best time for researchers to visit.
